South Korea is bracing for a sharp drop in temperatures Wednesday, with Seoul expected to wake up to just 2 degrees Celsius and parts of the country dipping below freezing as an autumn cold snap sweeps across the peninsula.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, Wednesday's morning temperatures will range from minus 2 to 7 C nationwide, falling 5-10 C from Tuesday. Strong winds will make conditions feel even colder, with daytime highs reaching only 11-16 C.
Seoul, Incheon and Suwon are forecast to see morning lows of 2 C, while Chuncheon will drop to minus 1 C, Daejeon to 1 C, Daegu to 2 C and Busan to 7 C.
Mountainous areas of Gangwon Province will face even colder conditions, with temperatures expected to plunge to minus 5 C in some areas.
The sudden chill comes as cold air from the northwest moves south across the peninsula beginning Tuesday afternoon. Clear skies overnight will also allow heat to escape from the ground, pushing temperatures down further by Wednesday morning.
The cold weather will continue Thursday, with morning lows ranging from minus 1 to 9 C and daytime highs of 12-18 C.
Temperatures are expected to rebound briefly Friday as rain moves across central and western regions, with daytime highs climbing to 18-22 C.
